Getting Started

NEEDING ASSISTANCE

You may feel that you would like some assistance with your family history from someone who knows, particularly when dealing with records in a foreign country. Don't panic! Here are some ideas on where to turn to for help.

Genealogy Unit, Dundee City Registrar

Set up in response to the growing demand for searches from family historians, the Genealogy Unit offers the services of a fully qualified registrar to conduct genealogical research at the cost of GBP45 for a 2½ hour session, with any findings collated into a series of charts. Postal or e-mail applications are accepted for an initial fee of GBP45 (including a full report with family charts), minor enquiries free of charge.

Through a computerised link with New Register House, Edinburgh, the Registrar has access to the Statutory Records for Dundee and Angus, Census Returns and Old Parochial Registers, the IGI and the Internet. Searches for possible surviving relatives can also be done. Certified copies of Births, Marriage, Death can be provided of GBP13.50 each. Again, minor information is free.

Anyone with Dundee and/or Angus connections who requires professional assistance should make Dundee City Registrar their first port of call. Email: registrars@dundeecity.gov.uk

Angus Archives Research Service

If you are in need of assistance in tracing ancestors in Angus, Angus Archives operate a research Service, utilising the resources of the Angus libraries and the Archives themselves.
