Angus Parish Map

View map showing the pre-1891 boundaries of parishes making up the old county of Angus.

Important points to note:

The county of Angus, which included Dundee, was previously known as Forfarshire.

Some parishes comprised more than one area and were quite spread out e.g. parts of Maryton Parish can be found between Farnell and Kinnell and also between Craig and Lunan. Also, parishes situated on the county boundary were sometimes split, with part of the parish lying in one county and the rest in another e.g. before 1891, Coupar Angus lay partly in Angus and partly in Perthshire.

Parish and county boundaries were changed in 1891, affecting mainly those parishes on the periphery of the County. However, the changes were made after the taking of the 1891 Census, therefore the Census from 1841 to 1891 inclusive and all the Old Parish Registers are based on the pre-1891 boundaries. See Angus Parish Information for further details. If you are unable to find a specific entry, it is safer to search adjacent parishes in case of boundary changes.

Some places in Angus County are not to be found in the parishes that you would expect. For example, before 1891, the records for Broughty Ferry, presently a suburb of the City of Dundee, can be found some in Dundee, but mostly in Monifieth. Some Carnoustie records can be found in the parish of Barry and some in Panbride parish. Lochee is in Liff & Benvie Parish, but is in the burgh of Dundee.

A list of "anomalies" and the important changes to county boundaries after 1891, can be found in "Beginning Your Family History Research in the Tay Valley: A "Where To" Guide" by William Owen, available to members of the Tay Valley Family History Society. This information can also be accessed in the Society library.
